Five environment-friendly brick manufacturers have been awarded with a total of Tk 2.87 crore as carbon revenue for using clean technology that reduces coal consumption by a half.

The awardees include Kapita Auto Bricks Ltd, Eeta and Tiles Ltd, Banolata Refractory Ltd, Universal Bricks Ltd and Eco Brick Ltd.

The five brick makers reduced emissions of 65,603 tonnes of carbon dioxide by using the Hybrid Hoffman Kilns (HHK) technology from January 2018 to March 2020, according to IIDFC.

Md Matiul Islam, founder chairman of the Industrial and Infrastructure Development Finance Company Ltd (IIDFC), handed over the cheques to the owners and representatives of the brick kilns at a programme at IIDFC’s head office in Dhaka today.

Md Ataur Rahman Prodhan, chairman of IIDFC (incumbent) and managing director of Sonali Bank, and Md Golam Sarwar Bhuyian, IIDFC managing director, were also present.

“It is estimated that 1 lakh pieces of bricks the traditional Fixed Chimney Kilns use 25 tonnes of coal.

Due to the introduction of HHK technology, it reduces coal consumption by about 40-45 per cent for each 1 lakh pieces of bricks compared to traditional brick kiln, Islam said at the programme.
